Advanced Small Modular Reactor (SMR) Development in New Brunswick / Développement de petits réacteurs modulaires (PRM) avancés au Nouveau-Brunswick

Update on the Advanced SMR Cluster in New Brunswick

New Brunswick continues to make progress towards the development and deployment of advanced Small Modular Reactors (SMR) – the next generation of nuclear technology.

Since 2018, NB Power, Moltex Energy, and ARC Clean Energy Inc. (ARC Canada), have been working collaboratively to establish the province as the hub for supply chain and technical support as advanced SMR technology is deployed in Canada and internationally.

Earlier this year, several funding announcements were made in support of this development. In February, the Government of New Brunswick announced $20 million in funding for ARC Canada towards the advancement of their design of the ARC-100, a 100-megawatt sodium-cooled fast reactor.

Further, in March, the Government of Canada announced $50.5 million in funding for Moltex through the Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF) and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) towards the advancement of their design of a 300-megawatt Stable Salt Reactor – Wasteburner (SSR-W) and WAste to Stable Salt (WATSS) facility.

The Government of Canada also announced funding for New Brunswick Power (NB Power) to prepare the site at the Point Lepreau location for SMR deployment and demonstration, and to the University of New Brunswick to expand its capacity to support SMR technology development.

A state-of-the art SMR production program brings countless benefits to grow the low carbon economy of the future. The development, manufacturing, construction, and operation of advanced SMR units in New Brunswick, followed by national and international deployment, is projected to create:

For New Brunswick:
• 2,600 jobs per year (Direct and Indirect)
• Over $11B in Provincial GDP (Direct and Indirect)
• Over $1.2B of Provincial tax revenue

For all of Canada (including New Brunswick):
• 13,000 jobs per year (Direct and Indirect)
• Over $59B in Federal GDP (Direct and Indirect)
• Over $5.2B of Federal tax revenue.

Upcoming Supply Chain Event
Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters (CME) will be hosting a New Brunswick Small Modular Reactor (SMR) Supply Chain Event this fall focused on how suppliers from Atlantic Canada can participate in the advanced SMR opportunity.

The event will feature speakers from NB Power, ARC Canada, and Moltex Energy, along with representatives from the Government of Canada and the Government of New Brunswick, as they provide an update on progress, timelines, and vision for advanced SMR development and deployment in New Brunswick and Canada.

During the event, specific focus will be given to how participants can be involved, through facilitated Breakout Sessions and opportunities to engage with vendors.

The event will be held in Uptown Saint John on October 28th from 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM (subject to change in accordance with provincial COVID-19 restrictions).

We look forward to your attendance. Further details to follow.
